Presidential candidates on mental illness

by Martin Lynch

It is pretty well established that one in four Americans will experience some form of mental illness during their lifetimes, yet many Americans fall through the cracks when it comes to receiving needed services. For these reasons alone, mental illness demands our attention during the election cycle.

At the start of the campaign season the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) asked all presidential candidates in each party to respond to a 24-item questionnaire on various mental health issues. Topics included the candidates’ position on parity for mental health coverage under insurance plans, mental health services for veterans, and so on. Senator John McCain sent a one-page response, and Senator Barack Obama responded to all 24 items and included detailed comments for each. The link is provided here.

What are your thoughts about the respective positions taken by the two candidates? What do you think about both the form and the content of their responses? Is it true, as the old marketing saying has it, that “the medium is the message”?

Share your thoughts on this important issue as we head into the final countdown for the 2008 presidential election.
