These are a few of my favorite things
About six weeks ago, I moved to Rochester and started classes at Warner. I’ve been around here long enough now that I feel like I can call this place home. Below, I share with you a few elements of city and campus life that make me feel so welcomed:
1) First and foremost, the community. The counseling program at Warner is fairly small and I see a lot of the same first-year counseling students in all my classes. By this time, we have all gotten to know one another and can share personal stories and laughs. This usually happens during our breaks between classes or even during class, when our professors happily join in on the conversation.
2) The little things. The first thing I noticed about the University of Rochester was how everyone was so friendly and willing to help out. One of my friends in class had just bought a new puppy, and he couldn’t be kept at home alone as she was in class. Our professor let her keep the puppy in her lap for the whole class period. Another example is the toll booth attendant. When I visited U of R as an undergrad, I needed to find parking but had forgotten to bring money for a parking pass. The attendant let me park at a free meter right outside the admissions building. These are just two examples of little acts of kindness I have witnessed while I’ve been here that make me feel so welcome.
3) The Rochester Public Market.
Located at 280 North Union Street, the public market is the place to go for cheap produce. Being short on cash, I love to go on Saturday mornings and find fruits and veggies that have been grown locally. Last weekend I got five ears of corn for $1, about 10 fresh nectarines for $2.50, 4 fresh peppers for $2.00 and a bunch of fresh carrots for about 50 cents.
These are my favorite things about Rochester, but there’s a whole lot more that I love about this place. If you want to hear more, feel free to comment or email me at studentexperience@ur.rochester.edu.
