New year, new beginnings

Rochester students at candlelight celebration in front of Rush Rhees Library

Dear students,

As we step into 2025, I’m reminded of the power of fresh starts and the opportunities they bring for reflection and growth. The new year invites us to envision possibilities and build on our shared journey.

Since joining the Warner School in July 2024, I’ve been deeply inspired by the dedication of our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Together, you have demonstrated leadership in research, scholarship and practice—work that has created meaningful change in schools and communities worldwide. From advancing STEM education to promoting lifelong well-being—your contributions extend far beyond the walls of LeChase Hall, reflecting the strength and impact of our Warner community.

Looking forward, we are focusing on three research priorities to address today’s challenges and shape a brighter future:

  1. Inclusive STEM Teaching, Learning, and Belonging (I-STEM)
Advancing inclusive practices in K-20 STEM classrooms and addressing gaps in STEM pathways to ensure equity and belonging in STEM education.

  2. Advancing Well-Being, Mental Health, and Thriving Across the Lifespan
Promoting lifelong growth and learning to enhance well-being from childhood through older adulthood.

  3. Leading Innovation and Transformation for Social Impact
Driving transformative change in education, counseling, and human development through innovative practices and dynamic leadership for lasting social impact.

These priorities reflect our commitment to fostering growth, connection, and belonging—values at the heart of the Warner School. The new year offers an opportunity to deepen these values, form new collaborations, uncover fresh insights, and take on new roles as leaders and change-makers in education and human development.

Let 2025 be a year of new beginnings, shared achievements, and personal and professional growth. Remember, you are an essential part of a community that values your unique contributions and is here to support you every step of the way.

Let’s embrace this new chapter together. I look forward to all we will accomplish in the year ahead.

Meliora,

Melissa Sturge-Apple, PhD
